“Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises.”
~ Pedro Calderón de la Barca
Green is the colour of life and growth. Think of fresh grass beneath your feet, the first leaves unfurling in spring or the stillness of a forest where your breathing naturally slows. Green connects us to nature and invites us into harmony with ourselves and our surroundings. There is something quietly magical about it: a gentle, calming power that does not drain your energy, but restores it and brings you back into balance. That is why being surrounded by green quite literally feels refreshing.
In colour theory, green represents the heart: the place where love, compassion and connection meet. It forms a bridge between the warm red of passion and the cool blue of calm. Surrounding yourself with green creates space for balance between emotion and reason. It is a patient colour, supporting choices that are more closely aligned with your true essence.
Green also builds a bridge between the spiritual and the earthly. It strengthens intuition while opening the door to creativity and artistic expression, qualities that nourish the mind and, at the same time, help us create prosperity in the material world.
This colour supports healing and meditation and has long been associated with restoration. Modern science supports this symbolism: research by the RIVM, Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (2022) shows that nature has a positive effect on our health. It is no surprise, then, that we feel better after a walk in the woods or an afternoon spent in the garden.
Green also helps us gain perspective. It is the perfect balance of yellow and blue: yellow offers a fresh, objective outlook, while blue supports clarity and sound decision-making. Together, they encourage us to let go of what we cannot control and focus our energy on what we can influence.
Perhaps this is green’s greatest challenge for us: to pause and sense where our attention truly belongs. So let us allow ourselves that more often: step into the woods, surround yourself with green and notice how it gently guides you back, step by step, closer to yourself.
